AAC Rideshares & Safety Pilots

Acro![Note: this is a new feature, and relatively untested -- please send any bug reports, comments, suggestions, etc., to AAC Webmaster -- Nataasja, 9/1/09].

This page lists AAC members who have indicated that they are willing to act as safety pilots for other club members during VMC IFR training or practice, and / or are generally willing to share costs and / or piloting duties to specific ("want to fly to Reno second week in July") or general destinations ("just want to fly!!") with other club members.

Availability, experience levels, etc., for each pilot are listed below along with the pilot's name. Due to relentless spam problems we are not listing contact details below -- please use the club's scheduler website to get relevant email addresses or phone numbers.

The AAC is not responsible for your choice of safety pilot or rideshare, or for terms and conditions of things like cost sharing. What you agree to is entirely up to you, but make sure all parties agree to (and understand) the details ahead of time. Again, we will not, as a club, get involved in any such disputes unless they break club rules.

Remember that to act as safety pilot, you must have at least a private pilot certificate and a valid medical certificate. Safety pilots must meet all currency requirements -- have completed a flight review within the last 24 months (if applicable) and be current for carrying passengers (3 landings and takeoffs within the last 90 days for day or night).

Each pilot may log the flight time as pilot-in-command: The pilot under the hood as "sole manipulator of the controls" and the safety pilot as a required crew member. Be sure to sign each one another's log book entry and include your certificate number

it is your responsibility to work this out with any intending rideshare partners or safety pilots! And remember, there are a bunch of FAA rules applicable to these cases, which we'll leave as an exercise for the reader, but that you absolutely must observe while flying in club aircraft. In my experience, it's common for safety pilots to fly free (it's a really good way for IFR students to watch a pro at work...); logging this can be a bit more problematic. For rideshares, what you agree to is entirely up to you, but make sure all parties agree to (and understand) the details ahead of time. Again, we will not, as a club, get involved in any such disputes unless they break club rules.
For more information on a safety pilot's responsibilities, see John Ewing's Flying with a Safety Pilot article.

To be included on one or more of the following lists, or to change or delete a listing, please email me (Hamish) with the relevant information. To contact any of the listed pilots, please consult the club's scheduler website for the relevant email address or other contact information.
